Access to Treatment

Going into the helping profession has been my goal for a very long time. Early on in that venture, in college, I decided to follow the niche I was most passionate about, Eating Disorders and body image issues. As you likely already know, I practice out in Patchogue, NY. For any of you not from around here, that is in Suffolk County centered on Long Island, NEW YORK! Why do I capitalize all letters of the state, you ask? I do so to make my next point. One might expect many treatment options and endless access to treatment for the state in which the city that never sleeps calls home. However, that sadly is not the case.

Prior to opening my practice in Patchogue, I did a lot of research about the treatment options out here for Eating Disorders, not just in Suffolk County, but also in Long Island entirely. I was shocked to find so little, since again this is New York! We literally can’t go more than a mile without hitting a 7-11 or McDonalds, but we have so little options to get help for an Eating Disorder.

In earlier posts, I had talked a lot about how imperative it is to get help for an Eating Disorder from someone who is an Eating Disorder treatment specialist. I encouraged you to do your research and to interview a prospective therapist about what their experience and knowledge-base is regarding the treatment of Eating Disorders. Unfortunately, even therapists aren’t aware that treatment for Eating Disorders is different than any other treatment and sometimes they aren’t even very aware about Eating Disorders in general. No fault of theirs, sadly, education in this field lacks proper time paid to learning about these disorders.

Let me bring you back to my research as I had mentioned before. I was shocked to find that there were very little Eating Disorder treatment specialists on the Island, especially in Suffolk County. My office is in Patchogue as I had already mentioned, but because of this lack of treatment options, I offer therapy for anyone who lives in New York. You may wonder how I can do that? The answer is with wonderful technology that enables me to speak with someone face to face without them being in my office.

I recently posted a blog about tele-help which is the ability to help people using just their smart-phone, tablet, laptop or desktop. Clearly, since you are reading this, you have access to one of those things. That means you are accessing your means to help right now. If you live in New York, would like to discuss treatment options and maybe don’t live near Patchogue, reach out to me! We could start getting you help much sooner than you think and much simpler than you may have ever thought possible.

I hope you found this post helpful. If you know anyone who lives in New York and may not have the means to proper treatment for an Eating Disorder, please reach out to me using the “Contact Me” page, e-mail me at StateOfBalanceMentalHealth@gmail.com or give me a call at (631)-317-1654. I hope to speak with you soon!

I wish you the best help you can get on your journey to finding your State of Balance!
