It’s the day after Thanksgiving…perhaps you ate more than you had hoped. Maybe you gave into your Eating Disorder and your healthy self feels incredibly guilty. Perhaps you binged after everyone left. Maybe you even have plans to binge on leftovers after this.
So I’m here to say…SO…FREAKING…WHAT?! I am sorry that you are experiencing post-Thanksgiving guilt because of your Eating Disorder. However, what’s the use in beating yourself up over it? Your healthy self may be disappointed, your Eating Disorder self may be angry. Chances are…it’s a mix of both. You are a human being. It’s ok to be imperfect. And yes, it’s ok that perhaps you caved to your Eating Disorder. It’s all ok. Beating yourself up over it just hurts you more and tends to push you more into your Eating Disorder. Let’s make the radical decision, right here, right now, to forgive yourself. Have some compassion toward yourself. Remind yourself that you are human and are perfectly imperfect. Any perceived “failure” is actually an opportunity to learn. How can you learn from this experience? How can you observe what happened yesterday or perhaps what happened today? How can you observe from a non-judgmental and curious stance? You know those story-books where the narrator describes what is happening in the scene, but does not judge it. You are the narrator today. Take a step back, observe what happened as a non-biased narrator. Ask yourself what did you learn from the experience you had? Forgive yourself for yesterday or celebrate yesterday if you feel good about how yesterday went. But, please let’s make the decision, from this day, to forgive yourself for what happened yesterday, learn from it, and move forward.
