How Do I Know if my Eating Disorder is Back?

Are you in recovery from your Eating Disorder and find yourself struggling? Have you ever wondered if it’s possible that you are back in your Eating Disorder? If so, how can you tell if you still have your Eating Disorder or if it snuck back even far along in recovery?

If you are early on in your recovery, meaning less than like 3 years, you should continue seeing an outpatient Eating Disorder therapist and a nutritionist. Unfortunately, many people stop seeing their treatment team too early because they feel that they are recovered and that no more work is needed. However, Eating Disorders are complicated and so is Eating Disorder recovery, continued treatment is recommended atleast a few years into recovery.

There are new struggles to face when in recovery, and there are new struggles the further along you go in recovery. It is always best to be seeing a professional to help you through these. This video talks all about what recovery ACTUALLY looks like because recovery is messy and not as clean-cut as it may seem it should be.

Another benefit of seeing an Eating Disorder therapist during your recovery is because they can help to see your Eating Disorder more clearly. They are better able to decipher if your behaviors and thoughts are driven from your Eating Disorder or from a healthy place. If you are still struggling in recovery, they will be able to identify that earlier on (hopefully) so that you both can address it before it gets worse.

Getting the proper help can really be the reason that you relapse into your Eating Disorder or continue on in recovery. An Eating Disorder therapist can help you face these struggles and move further into recovery. On the same note, these struggles are based in your Eating Disorder, and if left unchecked, could hurt you and result into you getting worse in your Eating Disorder and out of recovery.

With all that said, the question is how to know if you still have an Eating Disorder in recovery. If you do suspect that you your Eating Disorder is a problem again and not just normal challenges you face in recovery, chances are you are struggling in your Eating Disorder. On the same note, I would check out the video I mentioned above to see if perhaps you are just struggling with normal recovery obstacles. Regardless, if you do not address them correctly, your Eating Disorder could become worse. This is why it’s best to be working with an Eating Disorder therapist.

If you went into treatment, you are equipped with the knowledge to figure out if your Eating Disorder is still affecting you. The only thing that may be holding you back is your Eating Disorder itself convincing you nothing is wrong, and you may be looking for someone to confirm that you are indeed struggling.

If you are not seeing an Eating Disorder therapist currently, please seek one out. Check out this guide to finding the proper help for an Eating Disorder. If you are seeing one, bring this question to them because they will be the best ones to help you figure that out.
