What is getting in your way of creating the life you want to live? Are you looking to achieve Eating Disorder recovery or simply wanting to improve your life in some way? Many times, we’re the biggest obstacle we face when working to create the life we want. Ever hear the “what if” chatter in your brain? “What if it doesn’t work?” “What if I don’t get what I expect?” “What if this all ends up being for nothing?” If these sound familiar to you, it sounds like you suffer for doubt-itus. Kidding, there’s not actually a diagnosis for it, however it still is very real. You are suffering from having doubts about yourself and your abilities. These doubts limit you and will certainly hinder you in living your best life. Here are some ways to help you get past these doubts; -The classic Fake it til you make it: This is actually a therapeutic tool I recommend to my clients, the DBT skill is referred to as “Acting as if.” Basically meaning, acting as though you’re the person you want to be and possessing the characteristics that you want to possess. It sounds super scary, but it actually can truly work in building confidence and starting to remove doubt. If you get through a day while “acting as if,” it proves to you that you can do it. Even if you just get through 5 minutes of acting as if, you can do it and you have the ability to be that person and have those characteristics. Check out this video for tips on how to fake it til you make it; How to Improve Confidence -Get out of your comfort zone! Easier said than done right? The only way to truly remove doubts is by doing the thing you have doubts about. We often have that “what if” complex where we think of a million scenarios of things that can go wrong, and convince ourselves out of doing whatever that thing is. It is incredibly uncomfortable to get outside of your comfort zone, because that’s where you’re comfortable (go figure!). Too many people fall victims to their comfort bubble, and it creates doubt and will knock your confidence down. You need to start taking steps outside of your comfort zone, accept the doubts that you do have about doing so, and finally ask yourself if the doubt you have were to be the case, what’s the worst that can happen? Often times, the worst that can happen is really not that bad especially in comparison to all we have to potentially gain from stepping outside the zone. Here’s a video to help you to start getting out of your comfort zone; Life Begins at the End of Your Comfort Zone
Try using these tips together since faking it will certainly be outside of your comfort zone. But remember, all you have to gain by stepping outside your comfort zone and facing those doubts. Doubts are a part of life, and there are times that doubts are functional for us. However, more often than not, doubts are just those things that hold us back from doing all we want to do. It’s scary to disregard those doubts and move forward, but it’’ be worth your while! I hope you found this post helpful!
