Have you ever found yourself wishing that you could just numb out all of your emotions? We want to stop feeling the negative emotions; sadness, depression, anxiety, fear, worry…etc.
I’m here to tell you that I understand that these emotions are undesirable. I understand that you don’t want to feel anything that doesn’t make you feel good. Who does, right? What we need to recognize is that all of our emotions, yes even the bad ones, have important and needed functions for us. Think about it. When you experience fear because of a hungry tiger staring you down, that fear is necessary. That fear is telling you that you have to run or do something to survive. That fear is a feeling you must experience for your survival in this example. Fear may even be functional when you fear that someone will laugh at you when you tell a story. You may be afraid that you will do something embarrassing. It’s ok to have some fear. It’s natural for us to want to be liked and not feel ostracized by the people around us. However, if you are having fear of embarrassment, that fear would not be functional if it is to the same intensity as your fear of a hungry tiger stalking you. When evaluating the function of our emotions, we need to understand what intensities are functional or not. If you were to rank fear on a scale of 1-10 (10 being the most intense), it would be functional for your fear to be at level 10 when you spot a hungry tiger staring at you. It would be functional for your fear to be maybe around 3 or 4 when you are fearing embarrassment. In order to help you better understand whether the intensity of your emotion is functional or not, I would encourage you to look at it like this scale. What would be reasonable to be at a 10. Keep in mind that a functional 10 for any emotion really should be reserved for your life being threatened in some way. If you are struggling with having emotions that have intensity levels that are not functional, talk to someone about it. Talk to someone who can help you confront those emotions and who can help you work on better managing your emotions. Allow yourself to feel your feels. Management of emotions is key, not numbing them!
