Mental Health Tools for Recovery

Welcome back to the blog! This week, I wanted to talk about some mental health tools that can be extremely helpful in Eating Disorder recovery and or achieving more of a State of Balance in your life.

The theme on my Youtube channel this week is therapeutic tools. I wanted to share these tools with you and I’m eager to see how they work for you!

Here are the tools I talk about;

  • The Miracle Question: This is what the therapy world knows this life-changing question as. The question is this; if you were to go to sleep tonight and a miracle occurs while you sleep, and you wake up in the morning to the life that you want, what would your life look like? What’s the purpose of this question you may ask? This question can really aid in the visualization process to achieving any goal, including recovery. Visualization is a powerful tool in goal-setting and achieving. Whenever we visualize, we are taking up mental space in a positive way, which as an added bonus (and a needed one), gives that much time where you are not in a negative space, which inhibits recovery. Check out more on the miracle question in my video here and how it can help specifically in Eating Disorder recovery! If you’re interested in learning more about visualization, here’s my guide on how to do it in this post!
  • View Life as a Pie: What on Earth does this mean? Well, we are actually pretty similar to pie. We only can be cut up into so many pieces before we have nothing left to give. If you are the pie-server at Thanksgiving, you want to make sure that you have enough slices to feed all of the people at the party. If there are more people, the slices must be smaller. In life, when are pieces are too small, we aren’t really giving our all to anything, and more than likely, we are incredibly stressed and overwhelmed. Additionally, when you give one family member a big slice of pie and another a sliver, the person who got the sliver probably won’t be too happy. In life, we want to divvy our pie up where all the constructs of our life are in line with our values. If family is most important to you, then yes, give it a bigger slice. If school is more important to you than friends, school should get a bigger slice. However, in order to keep it balanced, take an honest reflection of how your pie is sliced up now. Draw it out on a piece of paper. I mean it, get a piece of paper (bonus if you grab your journal!) draw out the pie that represents your life. Next, draw out the pie that you think would be your perfect pie. Now compare those two depictions. What do you have to do to in life in order to make your current pie to your dream pie? Take action! More on that here.
  • Stop Globalizing: Globalizing is anxiety-provoking at its best and paralyzing at it’s worse. When we are worried constantly about all the future holds for us, it is life-draining. It’s paralyzing when you globalize when going though a rough event in life. Let’s say you are experiencing depression, a break-up or a death. You may have extreme fear about how you can possibly live with this situation being permanent. That is paralyzing. When you find yourself worrying about the future like this, stop, take a breath, and focus on the here and now. What do you have to do for the next hour? Next 15 minutes? 10 minutes? 30 seconds? Once that time is up, focus on the next 30 seconds, keep doing that. There’s nothing beneficial of worrying about 10 years from now, it’s only hurting you and making it harder for you to get through this experience. Here’s more on globalizing and how to stop it!

I hope you are inspired to try one or more of these tools! Let me know if you try one, you can comment, send me an e-mail through my contact me page or DM me on Instagram! Speaking of which, if you aren’t already, follow me over there for inspiring, recovery-oriented posts each and every day!
