Power of Visualization

Visualization is a powerful tool in helping us to achieve our goals. No matter what goal you have, there is a way to use visualization to help you get there.

Let’s start by defining what this therapeutic tool is. Visualization is the act of intentionally imagining something that has to do with that goal. I know, sounds pretty generic, huh? That’s because there are so many different ways to visualize a goal when working toward achieving it. For this post, I will focus on two kinds that I have found to be very helpful for my clients;

  1. Visualizing what your life would be like once you achieved the goal: Think about every little detail you can possibly think of. What would you be doing with your days if you achieve this goal? What will you feel after this goal is achieved? Who is around you when this goal is achieved? Where will you be? Any detail you can think of, think of it. Spend intentional time on visualizing this scenario. Let’s talk about how it may look specifically for Eating Disorder recovery. Ask yourself what would your life look like in recovery? How will you be around food? What types of foods will you be able to eat again without judgment? What barriers that you’re facing now are no longer there? What role will food play in your life?
  2. Visualizing the characteristics of a person who has achieved that goal: Ask yourself what type of characteristics does a person have who has achieved this goal you want to or is likely to achieve it? Do they possess strength? Courage? Determination? Fearlessness? What is it? Now that you have a list of characteristics, look at each one deeply. What does courage look like? How does this person express courage? How is this person expressing fearlessness? Now here’s comes the visualization. Visualize yourself having these same characteristics of the person who has already achieved the goal you’re hoping to achieve.

Now that you visualized these scenarios, what’s next? Don’t just leave this practice and move on with life. Use this tool daily. Visualization is so powerful in achieving our goals. Make it part of your daily routine and be open to these scenarios that you have visualized to be a possibility for you. When you’re ready, start playing with the characteristics you gave this person who achieved your goal. Start experimenting and acting as though you possess these characteristics. It will feel weird at first, but keep with it. You don’t have to go all in immediately, just baby steps. You will be surprised what this, combined with being open to manifestations in your life will do for you.

Remember visualization can help you achieve any goal whether its small like waking up earlier or big like Eating Disorder recovery, it can help!
