Read This Before Searching for Thinspiration

Thinspiration, pro-Ana and pro-Mia content are to those struggling with Eating Disorders as drugs are to someone struggling with drug addiction. This type of content is dangerous and toxic, however can appear so alluring to a person who is suffering from an Eating Disorder.

So you want to look for Thinspiration, what now?

I’m assuming that if you landed here first, your healthy self is trying to fight and I’m so happy about that. Even if your Eating Disorder wins, I want you to have hope because at the very least it was a fight for your healthy self. A battle is better than no battle!

I do hope that your healthy self wins though!

Here’s some tips to help encourage your healthy self to keep fighting
Picture
  1. Get Angry: Thinspiration is a manipulative, destructive and deceitful killer. At best, it makes you feel like crap about yourself (and if you have an Eating Disorder, you probably don’t need help with that) and at worst, it kills you. Allow this to make you angry. How dare a video, picture or post make you feel this way, hate yourself more and try to manipulate you into causing harm to your body. How dare it try to do that?! DO NOT allow it to do this to you!
  2. Take Some Time: Before you jump into consuming this type of content, take some time to watch or read something pro-recovery and positive. Commit to 5 minutes of doing something positive before you decide to look at Thinspiration, it’ll still be there waiting for you. 5 minutes up, what’s another 5 minutes? Try to re-commit to more and more time until the urge to engage in Thinspiration content is gone or at least you ran out the time that you had. Get on with your daily schedule now!
  3. Take Inventory: Take inventory of the reasons you have to want to recover. What is your motivation? Who do you want to recover for? What do you want to recover for? What has your Eating Disorder been taking away from you that you want to reclaim? Why do you want recovery?
  4. Digital Detox: Time for a digital detox. When you can access enough of your healthy self, delete all the accounts, subscriptions and friends that you have that contribute to your Eating Disorder thoughts and behaviors, or is Thinspiration itself. Load your feeds with pro-recovery and positive pages, subscriptions and friends! BONUS TIP: Delete your internet browser’s history and cookies so that it doesn’t recommend these to you based on past browsing behaviors.

Remember that Thinspiration, pro-Ana and pro-Mia are very dangerous. It will keep you sick and be detrimental to your recovery!
