Tips for Bad Body Image Days

For those struggling with any sort of Eating Disorder, Body Dysmorphia or body image issue, you may wake up feeling very differently about your body every day. You may have learned to tolerate it most days and you may even have some positive body image days also! Unfortunately, those bad body image days seem to always sneak up!

When these bad body image days pop up, here are some ways to help you get through them!
  • Call it out for what it is…a day. You have gone through tough days in the past, and you need to remind yourself that you can get through them still. It’s a tough day, doesn’t mean it’s the doom you will live with every day for the rest of your life…remember that!
  • Work on Body Neutrality: If you’re not too familiar with what that means, I did a video on it here. This worksheet can help you work on this as well! When we are in a negative state, positivity sometimes seems out of the questions! Work with what you’re given today, set yourself up for success…Body Neutrality is a lot more attainable on days like these than positivity. However, if you feel you can work toward Body Positivity, go for it! If you’re not at that point yet, it’s ok, Body Neutrality will do for today!
  • Recognize your perception is probably morphed: Body Dysmorphia has a funny way of sneaking up on us. It literally morphs your perception of your body. Therefore, it’s possible that you are not seeing what reality actually is. Call your Body Dysmorphia out!
  • Recognize most people won’t see: Whatever it is that you’re feeling extra insecure about today, I can guarantee that most people, if not all, won’t notice. We are our own worst critic and also see every little change in our own bodies…most people are too focused on themselves to notice that you have some bloat today.
  • Be compassionate toward yourself: Hating on yourself won’t get you anywhere except possibly setting you up for the poor body image days to continue. Have some compassion toward yourself!
  • Gently push yourself: Don’t give in to your bad body image days, but don’t push yourself too hard. Gently push yourself to do things that your body image is causing you to not want to do today. If your body image is causing you to want to dress down, try to dress up. If it’s telling you not to go outside, go for a walk around the block. It may feel hard in the moment, but it is necessary.
  • Recognize it’s your inner critic talking: Your inner critic tries to keep you stuck. Don’t let it trick you into thinking anything else. Recognize your inner critic and call it out. More on that in this video here!
  • Positive & loving self-talk: Again, be compassionate toward yourself. If you are being mean to yourself, recognize it, and soothe yourself as you would a friend or a sister coming to you. Talk to yourself like you’re your best friend!

Additionally, look for patterns in your bad body image days. Was there anything that you think contributed to you having a poor body image day today? Track this information because awareness is power! Once you have this awareness, it can help you to get ahead of it next time!
