Finding a Therapist on Long Island

Finding a Therapist on Long Island

Born and raised on Long Island, it certainly is a unique place where you can get the best of all worlds.

You can live in the suburbs and go an hour east or west and land yourself in NYC or at the beaches, nature and wineries of the East End. Despite Long Island being such a populated place and a place being called home by many, I have always found that people struggle to find therapists on Long Island, especially one that is a specialist in treating eating disorders. Even though Long Island is, well, long, and filled with many towns and people, it is not so easy to find a therapist whom you connect with as well as one who is able to help you.

I want to help you find a therapist on Long Island.

Here are some tips to find a therapist on Long Island:

  • Start looking: the first step is to just start looking. Open up Google or PsychologyToday.com and look up “therapists Long Island.” You’ll get a really long lists of all of the therapists who serve the Long Island area.

  • Narrow it down: If you’re using Psychology Today, you can use the filtering option to determine who works with what it is that you’re struggling with and if they accept your insurance if you are looking for insurance coverage.

  • Determine if you’re open to online therapy: If so, this opens up more possibilities for therapists who may be an awesome fit for you that also serve the Long Island area, but are just out of a reasonable driving distance or who’s availability wouldn’t work for you if you needed to drive to an office. And let’s be honest, anytime we can avoid Long Island traffic, that’s a win!

  • Schedule a consult call: Most therapists will offer a free consultation call where they give you more information about how they work as well as answer any questions that you have.

  • Don’t get discouraged: This process may feel overwhelming. You may need to make a few calls before finding the therapist that works for you. Also, and this saddens me, but I hear that many people report not getting calls back from potential therapists. If this happens to you, please do not get discouraged or throw in the towel, there is a therapist out there for you. Just keep making calls. And rest assured, if you contact me for a consultation call, I have a policy that I get back to every single person who reaches out no matter what.

I hope that this helps you to find the right therapist on Long Island. Like I said, this can be an overwhelming process, but you don’t have to go through this alone. If you’re not sure where to start, feel free to contact me or send me an email at Stateofbalancementalhealth@gmail.com to set up a free 15-minute phone consultation. I promise that you will receive a call or an email back. If I am not a good fit, I will do my best to refer you to colleagues whom I believe may be a better fit.
